Can You Be Your Own Book Publisher?

There's a new book out whose author is determined to “expose” the “deception” and “overcharging” of self-publishing companies. Michael N. Marcus, author of Become A Real Self-Publisher, writes “Just as no one can eat lunch for you or take a bath for you, no one can self-publish for you. The companies that call themselves ‘self-publishing companies’ are really vanity presses that make most of their money by selling services to misinformed and naive writers, not by selling books to readers.”

He advocates becoming a “real self-publisher”, meaning that you do it all yourself: get the printer, get the designers and editors, get your own ISBNs and market your book. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m just wondering—if writers are “misinformed and naïve”, how can they do any better doing everything on their own? It seems to me they would still be prey to overcharging and deception by printers, editors and designers.

This is why I have always encouraged my clients to take charge of their own book publishing process by clearly understanding their goals and learning as much as they can about publishing so they can make the best choices for their book. Why are you writing the book? Why do you want to be published? What do you hope to get out of it? How much money do you want to spend? How much work are you willing to put into it?

When it comes to self-publishing, I believe it’s very much like a home renovation project. You could supervise the whole thing yourself: hire the architect, the electrician, the carpenter, the plumber and order all the materials yourself. Or you could hire a contractor to do all this for you. It’s the same with your book. You can oversee the whole project yourself or use a company that offers publishing services. It’s up to you to understand both options and choose accordingly.

Many of these publishing companies are reputable (I will admit not all are great, that’s why you must do your research!), and these days offer a better quality book and larger distribution than would normally be in the reach of a new author. I’ve used such publishing services and I work with a highly regarded company to bring these same services to my clients to help them bring their books into the world. This works best right now, and I may choose to do it differently in the future. But I will be the first to tell any writer that no choice is automatic. You must weigh your options and decide which path is right for you.

There doesn’t have to be “victims” here as Mr. Marcus says. But there is every opportunity to have many more educated consumers.

My Journey Continues...

My journey to re-inventing myself continues. In the last week, I have learned some amazing things about myself. Actually, in the last month, I have learned some amazing things about myself some of which I will be willing to share. The rest, well, you'll have to keep following my journey as I reveal more.

I have learned:
that I have grown tremendously
that I am still growing
that I am willing to be transparent without fear
that it really doesn't matter what you think about me
that I am passionate about ALOT of things
that I am willing to speak out and take a stand
that this blog is just the beginning
that we should ALWAYS be grateful for the smallest things
that I enjoy being loved and loving people

See, now that wasn't so bad, was it? I know you thought it was going to be some 'deep stuff', but as you can see, growth really does lie in simplicity.

I've grown weary of 'deep stuff'. I just want to live free. Free from worry, free from restraints and constraints, free to be who God created me to be. I am well on my way and it feels damn good.

My Life

One thing I've discovered is that there is a longing inside of all of us to make a difference. I used to deny this. I felt like I didn't 'need' anything or anybody to make me feel good. Until I started feeling this longing. What happened? My kids grew up. My marriage grew. I was not 'needed' as much anymore. And I felt empty. I started feeling like, "I need something to do, someone to care for, I want to be relevant." Yet, I felt so insignificant. Not needed. Forgotten. Which has led me to where I am today. I am going to re-invent myself. That's right. I am going to do some things that I've only thought about doing. I am going to follow my passion. I am going to allow myself to dream again. I am going to make new connections with like-minded people that can appreciate me. I've already started and it feels so good.

Always Remain Humble

I love life and I love living. I love meeting new people, lots of them. But I know that only a few will remain in my life. And that's ok. I recently have gotten to know someone who I like a lot. This person did something rare and wonderful for me. They may not think it was anything extravagant, but it meant a lot to me. I am reminded of something I heard God speak to me over a year ago, "Always remain humble." I am learning that in our humility, God will exalt us and shine his favor on us. For that, I am grateful. To my new friend, thank you for "leaving a piece God" with me. To God - thank you for keeping me on your mind.
